Cobham 1st XV (17) v (21) Dover 1st XV
Played 10th October 2009

Dover travelled to Surrey with some apprehension and with the knowledge that they faced an opponent whom they classed as the best team that they faced last season. Further changes from last week’s contest were quite rightly made and the team needed to be on top of the game if they were to come away with anything.

Old Elthamians 1st XV (19) v (18) Dover 1st XV
This game was as close as the score suggests but on the whole the hosts deserved the two points. It was an interesting encounter with Dover leading for the majority of the game and they should have, against the run of play, nicked it in the last play of the game had a three man overlap been used to its full potential.

The 61st East Kent Seven’s to be hosted by Dover RFC were held last Sunday in scorching summer weather, perfect for spectators, but energy sapping for those playing. Great thanks should go to Colin Hillman and Ray Biggs who controlled the event superbly despite several sides dropping out on the day.
16 sides played through the tournament ensuring every side had at least 3 matches each. Sides from Dover, Deal, Folkestone, Maidstone, Aylesford, Blackheath, Gillingham, Ashford, Warlingham and several others joined to make the day a great success.
The tournament saw many games of good humoured in the main, but highly contested ruby, which led to the eventual Plate & Cup semi finals:
The Plate competition was won by Blackheath, beating Folkestone 57 – 0.
The Cup competition final saw Dover (having overcome Deal 26 – 19 in the semi final), meet Warlingham (who beat Maidstone 19 – 12 in their semi final). The final saw the inevitable leg drain and despite Dover leading into the second half, Warlingham turned on another controlled performance to win 36 – 17.
Trophies were presented following the final at 6.30pm by Dover Mayor Bob Markham (our thanks to the Mayor for agreeing to this for us).
The referees on the day were excellent, special thanks to our annual visiting referees from Suffolk: Darryl Chapman and Rob Millin.
The hard work of Howard Beardsell, John and Carol Mercer and Bernard and Shirley Sedgwick ensured all were fed and watered throughout. The ladies from the shop, the sweets stall and the ice cream from Solley’s. Paddy, Dave, Lisa an Gracie for organising some of the U13/U14 & U15 squads for gate and litter duties. Special thanks to Adams the printers for donating the programmes, Jimmy Davies and P&O for their continued help and support.
This was truly a great end to a superb season for Dover Rugby.
Richard Catt – (Chairman).
Posted 12th May 2008

Forwards coach John Mercer and Dover 1st XV manager Dick Collins together with sponsor Robert Adams (Adams the Printers), got together some weeks ago to put together a method of recognition for the players who have seen Dover rise through the leagues. The idea of receiving caps was embraced by Robert Adams a supporter of Dover RFC for many years, and this was prior to realising play-offs and further league promotion this season.
Dover Town Council headed by Dover Mayor Bob Markham, provided the council offices complete with red carpet for the presentation of caps to those players having reached the set criteria; 20 1st XV games in London SE2/3 or above for Dover.
This resulted in 24 players, who knew they were there for an award but were unaware of who and what was being presented, receiving their club caps at the presentation on Thursday 1st May. The players were delighted with this recognition in semi traditional form, a handful of recipients having played for the club since they were 5 or 6 years of age. And for those that attended who were a few games short of the criteria emphasised their commitment to train and achieve the target next season.
Players who received caps (alphabetically): -
Martyn Beaumont, Lee Bowditch, Ed Close, Buster Collins, Stewart Dean, Jon
Foster, Greg Hewer, Chris Lucas, Ricky Mackintosh, Wayne Matcham, Shane Moore,
Ben Murray, Jamie Phillips, Dan Robinson, Kirk Savage, Ben Sedgwick, Ricky
Stanley, Dale Tonks, Lee Tonks, Jamie Townley.
Players awarded caps but not present;
Mark Beaumont, Ryan Davidson, Charlie Denning, Gus Surrendorff.
The Mayor and his colleagues put on a great display for the club, and following the presentations all concerned returned to the Dover RFC club house at Crabble for drinks and a buffet reception.
Dover continues to field sides full of home grown / local talent, and with a thriving youth and Mini programme the continuance of our building programme continues. Our thanks to the continued support of the volunteers, Council, Mayor and our Sponsors who's support and commitment is greatly appreciated.
This week-end (Sunday 11th May) Dover host the 61st East Kent Sevens competition with over 18 sides already confirmed, if he weather is as kind as the bank holiday week-end then this will be a marvellous event to visit and supporters are welcome.

The EDF Senior Vase has seen us over come local opponents, and sides from Norfolk and Essex, taking us to the quarter finals where we were drawn against Cullompton RFC (Nr.Exeter) Devon. Cullompton who also sit 2nd in their league, and boast an impressive record of not having lost at home in 2 seasons were this weekends formidable fixture. The team and much of the support travelled the 250 miles to Devon on the Friday, to ensure all were as fresh as possible.
Our hosts were superb, and should be proud of the fine facilities they have built up for themselves, the quality of the team and the true rugby hospitality afforded us. Cullompton are clearly working in a similar fashion to Dover, their side was young, strong and fast – which mirrors Dover and ensured an action packed game. The game was played at great pace and was a wonderful spectacle of which both towns should be exceptionally proud, and the result could have gone either way. Home advantage proved the edge and we wish Cullompton every success as they proceed in the competition, we will watch their progress with a tinge of envy as we focus our efforts on the league.
My thanks to the players, support staff, and the travelling support from Dover, who did the town proud and gave me such an enjoyable day (apart from the result of course).

Playing Kit Announcement!
There has been some concern as to what Dover’s representative rugby playing kit needs to be and where the boundaries / guidelines are. Hopefully the below will clarify this, for those of a much more senior age (please read Knickers for Shorts and Stockings for Socks), in accordance with the original club text.
Senior Sides
Shirts = Oxford/Cambridge Blue 4” hoops (Navy/Sky).
Shorts = Plain Navy.
Socks = Plain navy with sky Turn over tops.
Youth Sides (U13 – U17)
Shirts = Oxford/ Cambridge Blue 4” hoops (Navy/Sky).
Shorts = Plain Navy.
Socks = Navy and Sky Hoops.
Mini/Midi Sides (U7 – U12)
Shirts = Oxford/ Cambridge Blue hoops (Navy/Sky).
Shorts = Plain Navy.
Socks = Navy and Sky Hoops.
The socks with hoops can be purchased through the club shop, as can the Minis shirts (where the hoops are less broad for obvious reasons).
I hope this is of help.
