Forwards coach John Mercer and Dover 1st XV manager Dick Collins together
with sponsor Robert Adams (Adams the Printers), got together some weeks ago
to put together a method of recognition for the players who have seen Dover
rise through the leagues. The idea of receiving caps was embraced by Robert
Adams a supporter of Dover RFC for many years, and this was prior to realising
play-offs and further league promotion this season.
Dover Town Council headed by Dover Mayor Bob Markham, provided the council offices complete with red carpet for the presentation of caps to those players having reached the set criteria; 20 1st XV games in London SE2/3 or above for Dover.
This resulted in 24 players, who knew they were there for an award but were unaware of who and what was being presented, receiving their club caps at the presentation on Thursday 1st May. The players were delighted with this recognition in semi traditional form, a handful of recipients having played for the club since they were 5 or 6 years of age. And for those that attended who were a few games short of the criteria emphasised their commitment to train and achieve the target next season.
Players who received caps (alphabetically): -
Martyn Beaumont, Lee Bowditch,
Ed Close, Buster Collins, Stewart Dean, Jon Foster, Greg Hewer, Chris Lucas,
Ricky Mackintosh, Wayne Matcham, Shane Moore,
Ben Murray, Jamie Phillips, Dan Robinson, Kirk Savage, Ben Sedgwick, Ricky
Stanley, Dale Tonks, Lee Tonks, Jamie Townley.
Players awarded caps but not present;
Mark Beaumont, Ryan Davidson, Charlie
Denning, Gus Surrendorff.
The Mayor and his colleagues put on a great display for the club, and following the presentations all concerned returned to the Dover RFC club house at Crabble for drinks and a buffet reception.
Dover continues to field sides full of home grown / local talent, and with a thriving youth and Mini programme the continuance of our building programme continues. Our thanks to the continued support of the volunteers, Council, Mayor and our Sponsors who's support and commitment is greatly appreciated.
This week-end (Sunday 11th May) Dover host the 61st East Kent Sevens competition with over 18 sides already confirmed, if he weather is as kind as the bank holiday week-end then this will be a marvellous event to visit and supporters are welcome.

Finishing 2nd in London SE3 to Gravesend, Dover went to Coulsdon (Surrey) to face London SW3 runners up; Purley John Fisher FC in a one off promotion Play-Off fixture. PJF were great hosts, and had a formidable side – the game went to the final whistle with the lead changing hands. But a determined and never say die Dover clinched the winning points in spectacular fashion in the closing 2 minutes.
So 5 promotions in 6 seasons, the club continues the journey into level’s that have ever previously been attained. My thanks and congratulations to all at the club involved and supporting this achievement, I am truly proud of a club that has the courage to plan and make it happen – Dover RFC.

Tonbridge Juddians (10) v (26) Dover 1st
XV
Played 12th April 2008

This was possibly the poorest game Dover has played in recent seasons and the score line does little to reflect the closeness of this game. There might be a number of excuses one could try and use but quite frankly some of the visitors didn’t get out the starting blocks for this contest. Read more

Dover U13s (34) v (5) Kituro Under 13s
Played on 6th April 2008
On Sunday Dover U13s entertained Belgian touring side Kituro at Crabble. From
the kick off Kituro took possession of the ball and put together some neat phases
of play to take themselves deep into Shark’s territory, but good defensive
work from the Dover pack resulted in turnover ball from a ruck followed by a
long kick to touch. Read more

Dover travelled the short distance to Canterbury, buoyed by their recent cup win and boosted by the return from long term injuries of Chris Jones and Nathan Critcher. Dover's start was explosive, centre Dan Norris feilded the canterbury kick off and beat four defenders to touch down after no more than 15 or 20 seconds for a 5-0 lead and the best possible start.
