Still smarting from last year’s defeat at the hands of Dover
in the semi final of the East Kent Cup, and on a high from their
current season’s undefeated run, Whitstable were organised
and confident from the starting whistle. Their pack quickly took
charge of the ball at the first breakdown and their flanker crashed
over the Dover line to register the first points of the match. Consistent
with recent form, the Dover side were slow to wake up and fuelled
by their early success, Whitstable were again over the Sharks line
for a converted try. Two more tries followed for the hosts before
Dover went back to basics putting together some good phases of play
which set up Luke Rigden to score out wide bringing some cheer to
the stalwart army of travelling supporters. Intercepting Whitstable’s
kick, Luke Allen set up the forwards to take the ball to the opposition’s
twenty two metre line which was recycled out to the backs who showing
what they are capable of when they concentrate, set up Oliver Latham
to score just before the halftime whistle.
At the start of the second period Whitstable again took the early
initiative to cross the Dover line for a converted try. The young
Sharks dug deep and managing to follow up their kick and regain the
ball, the forwards surged towards the Whitstable defensive line to
put the ever industrious Rigden over to score. Again Dover displayed
their ability and another good passage of play from the backs was
rewarded with Rigden’s third try of the match. At this point
it looked as if the visiting side could pull back level but the hosts
had other ideas and in the last quarter closed the game down scoring
two tries one of which was converted.
