On Sunday the Sharks Under 13s entertained the Islanders at Crabble
in their third competitive match of the season.
From receiving the ball at the kick off the benefit of the new round
of evening midweek training sessions appeared to be paying off as the
team looked cohesive and better disciplined. Sheppey went over the
ball into an offside position and were punished by an excellent penalty
kick to touch close to their try line. Dover secured the ball at the
lineout and the forwards punched a way though the Sheppey defence scoring
a try to register the first points of the match. The home side continued
to dominate and were rewarded with their second converted try after
the forwards set up the backs to run over the Islanders line underneath
the posts. The last score of the half came after the Dover forwards
won a Sheppey scrum 10 metres from their try line setting up the scrum
half who charged over near the touch line to take the game into the
second period with Dover 17 points to nil up.
Dover continued to maintain control of the match, quicker to the breakdowns,
vastly improved in their set piece play and at the ruck and mauls,
Sheppey saw little possession of the ball. Dover’s determination
resulted in three well worked tries before Sheppey managed through
some good work by their forwards to set up their first try of the match.
Within the final minute the home side chased a clever searching kick
towards the opposition try line which they won, going over for the
last converted try of the match. The final score Dover 39, Sheppey
5.
The result was well deserved. Skill and fitness levels are improving,
combined with the team’s positive mindset this is a good platform
for the rest of the season – well done!
