The Under 13s travelled to Folkestone Rugby Club on Sunday for their first match of the new season . Our Under 13s have been training hard on weekdays and Sundays in the run up to their first game. Having moved from mini/midi to Youth rugby they were well prepared thanks to their coaches Bob Thomson and George Clark, assisted by some of the other dads.
Some excellent driving of the ball by the Sharks ensured they were able to score early in the game and this was a good start for them. However, Folkestone came back from their early defeat and punched hard through Dover’s defences to quickly even the score. The first 30 minutes of play was an excellent start to the season for both sides.
The second half saw an early try achieved by Folkestone who were quick to gain crucial ground and caught the young Sharks by surprise. Ever determined, Dover held their heads high and pushed on, some excellent driving and set piece play saw the Sharks playing well but against an excellent Folkestone side. Folkestone went on to achieve two further tries in the second half from long kicks into the Dover defences with one of these being converted for an additional 2 points.
Hopes were high near the end of the game when it looked as if Dover were about to score but alas the ref blew time just as the try was being scored and Dover’s hopes of a consolation try were dashed.
There is still a way to go in terms of putting skills learnt into use and fitness will be worked upon in the coming weeks but all in all, this was a good first game for the boys – well done!
