Dover fourth team enjoyed a comfortable win over a disjointed Ashford side
at a cold and windy Archers Court.Playing against the wind in the first half,
Dover took a little time to settle but soon the driving play of Pellet, Hover
and Yarnell allowed gaps to be exploited and territory and tries soon followed.Danny
Prescott opened the scoring following fine handling from both forwards and
backs.Mick Gaughan then produced a fine pass for Clive Wilikins to crash over.Justin
Marx then added another try following more fine handling and support play from
the Dover pack.
Ashford then captilised on a couple of Dover mistakes and with the help of
the referee they scored an opportunistic try. Dover came back from this set
back strongly but could not add to the early tries as white line fever set
in.
Playing with the wind in the second half, Dover started to dominate all aspects
of the game. Six tries were scored in the space of fifteen minutes and the
Ashford heads began to drop. The game was finished fifteen minutes early to
allow the home team to catch the dying moments of the first teams cup clash.
Aaron Westfield scored the pick of the Dover tries running 80 yards to score
a superb try and Steve Golden also scored a fine try following an excellent
reverse pass by captain Jason Wall. The other scores came from Howard, Gaughan,
Yarnell and Marx. A good team effort but there will be harder games to come
in the rest of the season.
