Dover (IV) 22 v 5 Whitstable (III)

Oh come all ye faithful, well perhaps just team manger Gareth Jones to watch Dover fourths grind out a victory at Archers Court. In freezing conditions more suited for frosty the snowman than open flowing rugby, Dover fourths managed to squeeze out four tries in a game littered by mistakes. As in the first leg Whistable put a good fight; sound visitors tackling and poor kicking from Dover allowed a scoreless opening quarter.
Dover finally opened the scoring following a good forward drive, which allowed Mike Samson to show a neat step and pass to put winger Clive Munns in at the corner. Dover then presented Whistable with a leveling score. Scrum half Claw found the opposition fly half with his pass that he accepted readily to stride across the line.
Dover responded well with the pack dominating the forward battle. Debutants Andy Sellman and Adam Scott winning ball at both the rucks and in the lineouts. The forward efforts were then rewarded with an opportunist try from captain Jason Wall who wrestled his way over the line. The game deteriorated for the rest of the first half and the majority of the second half. A low sun and a chilling wind affected both teams ability to handle the ball and so the forwards of both sides endured an endless succession of scrums and lineouts. The brightest part of the second half was the strong running of Aaron Westfield and the excellent refereeing of Mr Prescott. As Whistable started to tire, Dover finally managed to put a series of passes through the threequarters to allow Danny Prescott to score. Colin Claw then made amends for his earlier error with a fine show and go which sent the majority of the defence in the wrong direction and gave him the opportunity to rumble over the line. The final two legged score ended with Dover winning 66 V 29.
