Ashford 4th XV (12) v (52) Dover 4th XV

Dover 4ths travelled to Ashford with a strong squad hoping to build on last weeks resounding win over Sheppey. The game started in similar vane with Dover exerting early pressure, dominating the lineout and scrum. Dover’s first try came when scrum half Burr caught the Ashford defence napping with a quick tap from a free kick to score under the posts, with Biggs adding the conversion.

Dover’s scrum continued to enjoy the majority of the early exchanges winning good ball for the threequarters to stretch their legs. Even hooker Mills was able to demonstrate his dynamism with a 40 metre run, which included a dummy! It was the pack that rightly made the next breakthrough with Wilkins touching down from a driving maul. With Burr scoring his second try shortly afterwards, Dover were 19 points up by the end of the first quarter.

As per the previous week, Dover relaxed and allowed the opposition to get back into the game by making unforced errors. Encouraged by the errors, Ashford forwards started to drive Dover back with some strong rucking and mauling. Ashford were rewarded for their endeavours by charging down a clearance kick for a converted try.

Ashford started the second half the stronger team and soon created a 4 on 1 overlap to score their second try. With Ashford only a converted try behind, Dover managed to find the control they had early on and scored a further five tries (M Gaughan, R Gaughan, Yarnell, Frogger and King) with some free flowing rugby. It was good to see Frogger back after a lengthy lay-off through injury, and Bowman marking his first game of the season with four conversions.
