Dover seconds came back down to earth with a bump on Saturday losing
for the first time this season to a hotly disputed 85 minute penalty.
Even though it would be easy for Dover to lay the blame at the referee's
door in reality Dover should have been out of site long before.
For the first 20 minutes Dover were not at the races and went 6 points
down. Eventually after realising they were in a game Dover woke up
and started taking control with the boot of Marsh bringing them back
in contention with 4 penalties to make the score 12-6.
It was now Dover imploded conceding 2 tries (1 converted), the first
a lack of communication allowed a Whitstable player to run in untouched
and the second a short range drive following 8 bewildering penalties.
The best part of the game now followed for Dover who rolled up their
sleeves and showed great determination to get back to the other end
of the field and take the lead though another Marsh penalty & a
well worked Cattermole try. With Dover starting to think they were
home and dry last play was called but before the final whistle could
be blown 4 more penalties had been awarded against Dover to bring Whitstable
within kicking range. The fly half duly obliged and a game that should
have been won comfortably was gone.
Dover should not be to down hearted because as long as they learn from
their mistakes and keep building on the team spirit the potential is
definitely there.
