Dover U7s put in a respectable performance at the Kent Mini rugby festival at Westcombe Park this weekend. They started well with a 6 - 4 win against Whitstable. In the first half Abigail Coles and Joe Sabin scored a try a piece with Robert Frackleton just narrowly missing putting a point on the score sheet. From the restart Ben Mckeown shot off down field, released to Aurellian Austin who passed out of the tackle enabling Max Norris to cross the line. Whitstable started making a comeback putting two tries on the board before Austin and Jamie Davies set up a move which resulted in McKeown scoring. Whitstable were able to pull two more tries back but Coles and Austin went on to score again sealing the victory for Dover.
Their next opponents were Ashford and a lively end to end match ensued. Sonny Batts was the first to score but Ashford equalised almost immediately. Good defensive pressure by the young Sharks led to Ashford making a mistake on their own line and Frackleton was perfectly positioned to pop the ball over the line putting Dover in the lead again. Ashford pulled it back again but McKeown and Declan Quincey scored a couple between them putting Dover two ahead. Ashford were quick to respond and pulled it back to a draw. It looked like Dover were going to go into the lead when Austin went over the line but the referee disallowed the try as the young Shark was not on his feet. This gave Ashford the chance they needed to go one ahead but in the dying moments of the game Austin got his own well deserved try giving the match a 5 -5 draw.
Next up were Tonbridge Judds. Harry Windley put in some excellent tackles as did Frackleton but Judds had two speedy runners who ran in seven tries to Dover's three. Sharks scorers in this match were McKeown, Coles and Austin.
The last match was against Tunbridge Wells and Dover were hopeful of a win. Austin put the first point on the board only for Wells to equalise straight away. Kai Freeth then powered his way across the line but Tunbridge W equalized again. This set the pattern for the match, Dover scoring but Tunbridge Wells drawing it level until a mistake by the Sharks allowed the opposition to go one ahead and now it was Dover chasing the scoreline. Coles brought the score level at 4 - 4 but Wells went one ahead again. Batts drew it level at 5 - 5 but in the dying moments of the game Tunbridge Wells put the winner on the score sheet.
Dover u7s should feel proud of themselves. They are Declan Quincey, Sonny Batts, Aurellian Austin, Kai Freeth, Jamie Davies, Harry Windley, Robert Frackleton, Abigail Coles, Joe Sabin, Ben McKeown and Max Morris.
