Dover’s recent good run ended here with a narrow defeat in a close-fought encounter. The visitors were caught cold with a Deal try in the corner after three minutes, 5-0.
Deal’s strong running forwards appeared to pose a big threat but Dover stabilised and contested hard to stifle the home side but seldom threatening the Deal line themselves. Both sets of forwards dominated the play in centre field and an even first half ended 5-0.
Early in the second half and Dover has to defend bravely. They did well at the scrum and lineouts improved at the game went on. Deal shaded the territorial battle this half and scored again with five minutes remaining, 10-0. Dover responded well; Jack Smith’s strong burst led to a Rigden try to narrow the gap to 10-5 with two minutes left.
Dover will take heart from a good defensive display but will rue their inability to capitalise on promising penalty awards in a game they were capable of winning. Many good performances, but man of the match goes to Jack Smith.
