With Dover 2nd moving up to the Invicta Leagues this season, this fixture was
meant to provide a tough test to gauge the team’s progress from last
season.
Dover fielded a strong side, despite missing Stuart Dean at Fullback. The
first half began ominously as Old Wills applied pressure and scored in their
first attack of the game. Dover had started sluggishly, struggling against
the wind, the hill and an astute opposition fly half. A second try for Old
Wills came midway through the first half, this combined with a couple of
missed penalties almost saw Dover heads drop. 10-0 at half time.
The second half started and the elements were in Dover’s favour.
Two
penalties from Marsh steadied the team and the Dover forwards started to gain
the upper hand.
Dover’s
first try also came through a Marsh penalty, as he cleverly fed Chambers
the ball to plunge over for the score.

An overlapping
Holdsworth scorched the second try, before Bowditch rounded off the scoring
with a bullocking finish after supporting a break from Sluman.
Big performances
from Gill, Burr and Coughlin set up the win and special mention must go
to Tom Birrell for a great 2nd team debut.
Team: Coughlin, Birrell, Burr, Holdsworth, Morton, Marsh, Denning, Jamriska, Chambers, Cattermole (Bowditch), Gill, Cherrington, May, Sluman, Matcham.
