Dover travelled to Essex with no less than 8 absentees from the 1st XV squad for a friendly fixture, which was vital for both teams in preparation for next weeks first league fixtures.
What was satisfying is that Dover selected hooker Ryan Gaughran, winger Dale
Mercer and back row forward Sam McNamara, all products from their youth system,
for their first contest against opposition of this class. In addition Dover
welcomed the return of Richard Heyward following his three year absence to
university.
The first half was full of handling and basic errors and numerous penalties
from either side and was at a stale mate for the first half hour. Thurrock
looked the more likely to score with some rugged defence keeping the hosts
out. They deservedly took the score after a comedy of errors in the Dover
half and fortunately a relatively easy conversion was missed. Dover responded
and
on the stroke of half time a swift move through the three quarters saw
full back Ed Close join the line to touch down.
The second half saw a more positive approach from Dover; however some poor
decision making complicated matters and the visitors lost an opportunity
to enhance their lead. Both teams should have scored with McNamara making
a superb
tackle on the try line to prevent Thurrock taking the lead and Martyn Beaumont
danced his way over 40 metres and through three defenders only to spill the
ball as he was about to score. Beaumont did kick a lengthy penalty to win
the game, which saved him from further banter in the changing room.
Although this was a confidence booster and a worthy win, Senior Coach Graham
Tonks provided his players with some constructive criticism which will
hold them in good stead for the game at Beckenham next week. Tonks was
however
full of praise for the efforts of the newcomers to the team, who all had
exceptional
games and will have a bright future at Dover.
