Dover U17 had their last junior match before they join the
ranks of the senior club, at Aylesford on Sunday afternoon where they
played in the Kent Bowl Final. The team was bolstered by three U16s
(Dale Mercer, Theo McMenamin and Alex Webb). The afternoon game suited
the team as from the kick off Aylesford were put under the cosh.
Dover had most of the first half, notching up fifteen points against
Aylesford's nil, a brisk crosswind forcing close quarter pasing with
kicking kept to a minimum. Any Aylesford possession was quickly challenged
to take away any wind advantage they had in the first half.
The second half saw Dover working hard in defence as Aylesford looked
to turn things around and they spent a good portion of the time in
Dover's half but it appeared frustration got the better of them and
a spell of ill-discipline cost them territory and some decisions. Nevertheless,
their efforts were rewarded with a try and conversion in the dying
seconds. Tries from Matthew Burr, Aaron Cooper, Dale Mercer (three),
and a conversion from Steven Golden allowed Dover to lift the bowl.
A satisfying end to a difficult season to put the team in high spirits
as they look towards development rugby at Dover next season. Anybody
wishing to play in the development squad next season should contact
the rugby club or visit the website www.doverrfc.co.uk.
