Dover hosted Deal and Bettshanger in a tough local derby at Crabble on Sunday.The visitors started strongly with good work by their forwards to put the Sharks under pressure in the first quarter. However, Dover had the upper hand in the scrum and following an attacking move by the Sharks backs Deal were penalised for an infingement on their own twenty-two. Fly half Greg Phillips stepped up and kicked the penalty to open the scoring for the Sharks.
Dover lost hooker Jamie Capon to a hand injury but replacement Sam Stott made sure the Sharks pack lost non of their momentum.Their lead was extended a few minutes later when man of the match scrum half Liam Clarke scored with a trademark darting run from a breakdown close to the Deal line to give the Sharks an 8-0 advantage at the turn around.
The second half saw the Dover pack gain the upper hand with prop Nick Keen having an outanding game in both the tight and the loose. The visitors conceded another penalty following pressure from the Sharks and Captain Kris Jones took a roundabout route to the try line running across the width of the pitch to score in the opposite corner. Greg Phillips added the two points with an excellent conversion from the touchline. Deal responded and mounted numerous attacks from 5 metres out but were held up by a stubborn Sharks defence. However, the visitors efforts were eventually rewarded when they crossed for an unconverted try.
The last 10 minutes saw Dover finishing the stronger and following five phases of play, which saw some excellent rucking and recycling by the forwards, the ball was moved out to the backs for Kris Jones playing at outside centre to score in the corner.Greg Phillips almost added another touchline conversion in the dying seconds of the game but was denied by the the post.
