Dover won a frustrating game away at Whitstable on Sunday. Playing
with the
wind and slope The Sharks exerted pressure from the outset and played
the
majority of the first half in the Whitstable 22. However, a combination
of
stubborn defence from the home side and poor decision making from the
Sharks prevented pressure being turned into points. The deadlock was
broken
mid-way through the half when winger Chris Yarrow forced his way through
two tackles to score.
With a slender 5-0 lead at the break the Dover forwards started to impose themselves in the scrum. With a solid platform for possession the Sharks backs executed an excellent set piece move to put centre James Beresford in for a try which was converted by Fly Half Greg Phillips.
The home side came back strongly and the Sharks were reduced
to
14 men when Chris Yarrow was sinbinned for what the referee adjudged
to be
a spear tackle. Dover repeatedly played themselves into trouble with
basic
errors resulting in a series of 5-metre scrums against them.
Fortunately
the forwards, with Jamie Capon playing an excellent game at hooker,
won
each of these scrums against the head allowing Phillips to clear the
danger. In the final 10 minutes Dover's superior fitness began to tell
but
a host of overlaps went begging before flanker Ben Rix eventually put
the
game beyond doubt scoring a try under the posts which was converted
by
Phillips.
