On Sunday the Under 12s travelled to Ashford RFC for a mini tournament involving Folkestone, Ashford and Rochford RFC from Essex who were temporarily based at Camber Sands as part of their Easter 2007 tour.
Dover’s first match against Rochford got off to a very positive start for the young Sharks and despite Rochford fielding two huge under 14s Dover went over their opponents try line to register the first try of the contest. In the second half Rochford set up a powerful move comprising of their 14 year old giants to smash a way through the Shark’s defence to level the scores. In the last minute of the match, Rochford picked up the ball from a long Dover kick deep into their half to set up the winning break-away try. Dover losing by 2 tries to 1.
In their second match against local rivals Folkestone, Dover started very positively putting together some good passes by the backs to score the opening try. Folkestone came back with interest playing with fluidity and pace to score two tries in quick succession, Dover went into the interval 2 tries to 1 down. In the second half the Shark’s defence was given a stern testing by a well-drilled Folkestone side conceding a further 2 tries. Dover losing by 4 tries to 1.
The final game against Ashford was held on a full sized pitch, the
Dover team looked far more threatening with some good probing runs
by the backs. Ashford were pegged back in their own half defending
well when a long pass went out to the Dover wing who went over to score
the only try of the half. In the second period the Sharks continued
to ask questions of the Ashford defence who despite numerous assaults
on their try line managed to hold out. The final result, a very satisfying
victory for Dover of 1 try to nil. The team coach was particularly
pleased his players efforts in this final match of the day. The young
squad clearly demonstrated its potential to develop as a cohesive unit
for next season.
