Teams from Canterbury, Folkestone, Sheppy, Ashford, Whitstable, Thanet and Dover’s young Sharks contested the Land Rover sponsored event at Canterbury RFC on Sunday.
Dover’s first game against Sheppy saw the Sharks off to a positive start going ahead with an early try, the islanders regrouped to level the scores at one try all by half-time. Dover again looked positive in the second half, finally scoring after a period of sustained pressure broke through their opponents defence ending in a win by two trys to one.
Dover’s critical second pool match against a strong Thanet side required a win to take them through to the final against Canterbury. The team did not disappoint playing more expansively and making good use of set piece play resulting in an excellently worked forward’s try. Thanet came out charged up for the second period spending virtually the whole of the half camped out on the Shark’s try line; a tremendous defensive effort from the whole team held out and the final whistle saw a delighted Dover coach and squad through to the final.
In the final, Canterbury took an early lead from a deep searching kick to the Dover try line, the home side pressure continued with Dover going into the second period four trys to nil down. The Sharks however worked hard to hold back the relentless Canterbury attacks but still conceded three further trys. Dover finished the match with a consulation try of their own, the final score ending with a home side win of seven trys to one.
Dover met a very testing standard of competition throughout the tournament
but rose to the occasion to finish with well-earned Runners Up medals
and some silverware for the Clubhouse.
