Dover ‘s Under 11s competed in this years 26th Kent Mini/Midi
Rugby Festival hosted by Folkestone this Sunday.
With a depleted side, down to 12 on the day (Get well soon Troy!), Dover started slowly in their first match against Maidstone. The Sharks went down by two tries without response in the first half, mainly due to some poor tackling. The young Sharks raised their game in the second half with good strong defence including good kicking and teamwork. This led to a forced knock on deep in the Maidstone half and a quick thinking shark took a quick tap and run penalty and jinked his way into the corner pulling the score back to 2-1. This renewed the team spirit and the young sharks were unlucky not to pull another try back before the final whistle. (Final Score Lost 1-2).
Next was Thanet who fielded a very strong side indeed. Dover started on the defensive and were held back for most of the game eventually going down 4-0. Much of the same in the next game against an even stronger Old Colfeians side with most heads dropping a little and many missed tackles it finished 0-5. With some strong encouragement from parents and coaches the young sharks heads didn’t go down again.
The next part of the day was the Shield knockout competition and after an incredibly long wait Tonbridge Wells were to be Dover’s first round opponents. Now down to only 11 players the young Sharks gave it their all, but it just wasn’t to be. With a man down the under strength team held on well, but again went down losing by only 3 tries. (Lots of work for us all to do on Thursday at training this week!)
Many thanks must go to all the very patient parents who supported the young Sharks well throughout the day. The under 11s were Kallum Allen, Kester Ashford, Shay Brook-Carey, Aidan Cook, Nick Dray, Derron Russel, Bradley Reeves, Angus Killen, Troy Millar, Charlie Pettman, Matt Ribbons, George Smith, and Kyran Wallis (Well done on your debut!)
