Another year and another different looking Dover 4th team took to
the field against an unevenly balanced Folkestone 3rd team. With the
pitch conditions at ‘soft-to-boggy’, it was going to be
a tough game.
Dover won the toss and elected to kick but it was Folkestone who took
an early lead with an unconverted try about 10 minutes in. This didn’t
dishearten the Sharks who continued to attack Folkestone’s defence
whenever they could. Prop Tanner took a hard knock to his shoulder
though elected to play on but it was basic errors that got the better
of the Dover team who let a converted try through just before the half
time whistle.
Dover started off strong in the second half, camping out in Folkestone’s
twenty-two but they just couldn’t get over the try line even
when awarded a penalty 5-metres out. Backs Bowman, Prescott and Munn
tried running at every opportunity but it must though have been the
changes that Folkestone made to their team that dramatically changed
the rest of the game. With Tanner suffering and the conditions underfoot
getting worse both teams elected for uncontested scrums but Folkestone
just stepped up a gear adding five converted tries to their score.
Regardless of the score, the team battled well throughout and never
let their heads go down. Well done to all the players. Final score
Dover 0 – Folkestone 47
